Things to Do in Boston
North End
Known also as Boston’s “Little Italy,” this thriving community encompasses just 1 square mile but is home to more than 100 Italian restaurants. You're sure to find something to your liking, whether it be southern or northern Italian cuisine or a freshly made cannoli from Mike’s or Modern Pastry. The North End is also the location of Paul Revere’s home and Old North Church, both of which are on the Freedom Trail.
Faneuil Hall Marketplace/Quincy Market
Built in 1742, this former meeting hall has been renovated into a thriving indoor and outdoor market with food stalls, restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment.
Freedom Trail
Stretching along 2.5 miles and past 16 of the city’s most historical sites, including Old North Church, this is a must for first-time (and repeat) visitors to Boston. The official start of the trail is in Boston Common, however you can pick up the trail anywhere you see the red brick line on the sidewalk. Walking the entire trail can take up to a day if you stop at each spot. You can also do a self-guided tour, download an audio guide, or go on a guided tour. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Boston Public Garden/Boston Common
This large garden and adjacent park serve as the focal point of the city. The Garden was the first public botanical garden in the United States and is where you can pedal a Swan Boat around the 4-acre pond. The Common — a large expanse of lawn and trees — is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Bike Ride
Boston has several protected bike paths on its maze of streets, but one of the best trails is off-road, along the Charles River Bike Path. Running along both sides of the river, the 17-mile route goes through Beacon Hill, past Fenway Park, and alongside Harvard. There are 10 bridges along the route, letting you shorten your ride if you wish. Another great ride is along the Minuteman Bikeway – a paved path going through Boston’s leafy northern and western suburbs.
Fenway Park
Home to the beloved Boston Red Sox baseball team and more than 100 years old, this is sacred ground for many baseball fans. If you're not in town during a game, get tickets for a tour of the historic ballpark.
Dining
From authentic Italian cooking, chunky New England Clam Chowder, oyster houses, Irish fish and chips, and namesake baked beans and cream pie, Boston will never let you go hungry and you’ll never have to go far to find a great meal.
Nightlife
The Faneuil Hall Marketplace area is always lively with numerous bars and restaurants. Several nightclubs are further south, and pubs — including the Bell and Hand Tavern, dating from 1795 — are concentrated near Union Street Park/Government Center.
