Things to Do in Phoenix
Taliesin West
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Taliesin West was his primary residence for 20 years and now is a National Historic Landmark. Make it a point to join one of the tours given by a knowledgeable guide. Afterwards, stop by the beautiful Biltmore Hotel, an architectural masterpiece designed by one of his students.
Sedona
Surrounded by red sandstone buttes with superb hikes, fun-filled jeep tours, and excellent shopping opportunities, Sedona is just two hours north of Phoenix and is a fabulous day trip… or (even better) an overnight.
Heard Museum
Internationally acclaimed, the Heard Museum has one of the best collections in the world of the art and culture of the American Indians of the Southwest. The nearby Phoenix Art Museum (less than a 1/2 mile away) is also exceptional with a collection of more than 17,000 objects of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American, modern and contemporary art, photography, and fashion design.
Shopping
From high fashion and hipster chic to vintage finds and souvenirs, the greater Phoenix area is home to some of the best shopping in the Southwest. For thoughtful souvenirs, browse the gift shops at the Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, or Taliesin West. High-end fashion and large box retailers can be found at Scottsdale Fashion Square and Biltmore Fashion Park. Downtown Phoenix is great for small boutiques and unique fashion finds.
Golf
With more than 200 golf courses in the area, Phoenix is a golf lover’s dream with courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and other top designers. Many high-end resorts have their own courses, so be sure to see if your hotel offers pre-reserved tee times. There are also public courses with less expensive greens fees.
Wrigley Mansion
Built in 1932 by chewing gum magnate, William Wrigley, Jr., the Spanish/Mediterranean-style home commands 360-dgree views of the mountains and city. Guided tours Tuesday through Saturday.
Nightlife
Downtown Scottsdale, downtown and central Phoenix, and near Arizona State University/Tempe are your best bet for pubs, bars, and sports bars. Central Phoenix is also where beer lovers can explore the city’s developing craft brew scene. If you are looking for casino action, two of the most popular are Talking Stick Resort to the north and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino to the south.
Dining
Restaurants serving mouth-watering Southwestern and Mexican cuisine are the most prevalent, but you’ll also find prime steakhouses, sublime seafood, slow cooking smokehouses, and iconic Western/cowboy restaurants. Restaurants are everywhere but primarily in and around downtown Phoenix or downtown Scottsdale, and along Indian School Road, Camelback Road, or Scottsdale Road.
