Travel to San Francisco
For a major U.S. city, San Francisco packs a lot into its relatively small size, and with convenient flights to San Francisco, going for a fun-and-food-filled long weekend is easy to do. Within a day, you can ride a cable car, have dim sum in Chinatown, shop along Union Square, and dine at an award-winning restaurant. Then make your vacation to San Francisco complete by taking another day for the iconic sights — the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz or head up to the valleys of Napa or Sonoma for wine tasting.
Things to Do in San Francisco
Golden Gate Bridge
The bridge is one of the most photographed sites in the world. Of course you can drive across it, but for a more intimate experience, walk or bike the 1.7-mile span.
Alcatraz
This former and presumably unescapable prison once housed some of the most notorious criminals in the U.S. Known as “The Rock,” the prison is on an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Ferries out to the prison leave from Pier 33. Tours include recordings of past inmates and their experiences while incarcerated.
Cable Cars
A familiar symbol of the city, cable cars have been transporting the local population and visitors around the city since the late 1800s. The most scenic route is the Powell-Hyde line, which travels over Nob Hill and Russian Hill and ends at the waterfront.
Parks
For its small size, the city has a high number of exceptional parks. The big daddy of them all — and larger than New York City’s Central Park — is Golden Gate Park with more than 1,000 acres of gardens, playgrounds, lakes, picnic areas, walking and bike trails, and museums, as well as a herd of bison.
Fisherman’s Wharf/Pier 39
Highly popular with visitors, the pier is a waterfront marketplace lined with shops and restaurants. Be sure to allow time to watch the antics of the resident sea lions.
Day Trips
Head up to the charming towns and exceptional wineries in Napa Valley or Sonoma Valley. Explore the natural beauty of Muir Woods National Monument and its mighty Redwoods. Visit charming Sausalito, a thriving community of artists.
Shopping
Serious shoppers should head to Union Square and the surrounding streets where they’ll find the biggest and best names in retail including Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., and Zara.
Nightlife
Head to the Mission and South of Market districts for music and cocktail bars. Live theatre can be found in the city near Union Square. Wine bars are, of course, popular and can be found in most neighborhoods. Jazz and blues bars are prevalent, too.
Museums
Lovers of classical and contemporary art will delight at their options, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Asian Art Museum, de Young Museum, and Legion of Honor.
Dining
San Francisco is one of America’s best restaurant cities with chefs using the freshest local ingredients and tastes are offered from around the world. Head to North Beach for the best in Italian food, Chinatown or Japantown for authentic Asian cuisine, and along the wharf for fresh seafood. Be sure to order a California-made wine to complement your meal.
