Travel to San Juan

Truly a unique destination, San Juan mixes the charm and culture of Europe, the exotic pulse of Latin America, and the familiarity of the U.S. along with beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and an amazing history. And to make this Caribbean vacation destination even better, no passports are required for U.S. citizens!

Things to Do in San Juan

Old San Juan

Take a stroll through the city and discover 500+ years of history and heritage, stop along the way at a sidewalk cafe, and be prepared to find the perfect photo opportunity around every corner.

El Morro

The fort offers 400 years of military history and breathtaking ocean views. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it on the expansive lawn out front.

El Yunque

Located 25 miles from Old San Juan, El Yunque is a subtropical rainforest with walking and hiking trails, picturesque waterfalls, and more than 240 species of plants and wildlife.

Shopping

Old San Juan is a shopper’s paradise with a wealth of jewelry stores, art galleries, clothing boutiques, and local artisan shops. Large retailers can be found at two nearby shopping malls — The Mall of San Juan and the 300-store, Plaza Las Americas. For luxury brands, explore Ashford Avenue in Condado.

Nightlife

San Juan is filled with clubs offering live salsa music, some of the best DJs spinning the latest dance tunes, smooth jazz spots, and more. In addition, most of the larger San Juan hotels have casinos for more late night action. To fit in like a local, dress up when going out.

Rum Tour

A whopping 70% of the rum consumed in the world comes from Puerto Rico and many of the distilleries — including Bacardi — offer tours.

Bioluminescent Bays

Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays, which is where tiny micro-organisms seem to light up the water at night when disturbed by movement in the water, such as a kayak paddle or hand. Choose a moonless night for the best experience.

Dining

Considered by some to be the gastronomic capital of the Caribbean, San Juan’s restaurants serve up tempting tastes from around the world — but the best is the Puerto Rican culinary tradition that combines native, Spanish, and African cultures into one amazing dining experience. Be sure to try the trinity of Puerto Rican dishes — asopao, a hearty soup made with chicken, vegetables and rice; lechon, a whole roasted pork; and mofongo, mashed plantains, seasoned with onions and garlic, often served as a starch side dish, but best served stuffed with shrimp or pork. End your meal with a cup of Puerto Rican coffee — some of the finest in the world.
