Travel to Cancun
Cancun and the Riviera Maya are both served by the same airport and have great beaches and weather — as well as fabulous resorts. However, each area has its own personality, too, with each offering a different vacation experience. Cancun is known for its nightlife, restaurants, and out-of-resort experiences, while the Riviera Maya is more widely known for a laid-back lifestyle at predominantly all-inclusive resorts. Each area has something to offer, including excellent vacation deals. Plus, with the frequency of flights on Sun Country Airlines and the proximity of resorts to the Cancun airport, going away for a short vacation or long weekend is easy and a perfect way to fit in a vacation to Mexico.
Things to Do in Cancun
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
The Riviera Maya is bordered by the largest reef in the northern hemisphere. In addition to reef diving, there are underground rivers, cenotes, and caves, for more experienced divers. Snorkeling is excellent in the natural aquarium of Xel-Ha, and around Isla Mujeres.
Beaches
Cancun and the Riviera Maya are known for their long stretches of sandy beaches, but for the best beach, be sure to stay at one of the resorts in the Maroma Beach area, considered to be one of the best beaches in Mexico.
Shopping
Exceptional shopping malls can be found in Cancun. Try La Isla or Plaza Las Americas for upscale shopping or Mercado Veintiocho (28) or Ki Huic for handicrafts. In the Riviera Maya, shopping is found in the charming villages. The best village (for just about anything) is Playa del Carmen. Along its pedestrian-only 5th Avenue are shops and boutiques, bars and restaurants.
Dining
Most resorts are all-inclusive, where most or all of your meals and beverages are included for one convenient price. However, if you want to go out, Cancun or Playa del Carmen offer the most restaurants. Cancun will have more upscale dining and familiar chain restaurant names.
Mayan Ruins
Mayan ruins are unique to this area and two of the best — Chichen Itza and Tulum — are both a day tour away. Chichen Itza is the largest and most famous Mayan site, encompassing soaring pyramids, massive temples, and the unique ball court. Tulum rests on a cliff above the ocean and is dotted with ancient temples. There are tours offered to these popular sites, as well as tours and excursions to many other vacationer favorites. If interested, be sure to see the Sun Country Vacations Destination Representative at your hotel.
Nightlife
The best nightlife in Mexico and perhaps all of the Caribbean is found in Cancun. Here, you’ll find plenty of bars and nightclubs.
