Things to Do in Cozumel
Mayan Ruins
The island of Cozumel has more than three dozen Mayan sites. The best preserved area is San Gervasio, where women once worshiped Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. El Cedral is the oldest structure and it, too, served as a sacred place.
Chankanaab National Park
This expansive park is perfect for a day of family fun. The lagoon is shallow, so perfect for swimming and snorkeling; farther out, the reef is great for more experienced snorkelers and scuba divers; and animal lovers can enjoy sea lion, manatee, and dolphin programs. Those that want to stay above the water can rent a kayak, explore Mayan ruins, relax in a hammock, or grab a bite at the onsite restaurant.
Diving
Cozumel is one of the top three diving destinations in the world, has the largest underwater reef in the northern hemisphere, and is only a few hours’ flight from the United States, making it ideal for scuba divers. Palancar Reef, Santa Rosa, and Punta Sur are among the best reefs to explore. For those who don’t know how to scuba dive and want to learn, many of the resorts offer courses to introduce you to the sport. Another option (if you don’t want to become a full-fledged scuba diver) is to SNUBA — a combination between snorkeling and scuba diving and where you can explore the beautiful blue sea up to 20 feet below the surface with no prior experience.
Dining
As Cozumel is an island, the predominant menu choice is fresh seafood, combined with dishes highlighting the cuisine of the Yucatan, influenced by the flavors and techniques of Mayan, Spanish, and French cooking.
Shopping
Many a cruise ship stops at Cozumel and so the waterfront area at the pier and downtown is lined with jewelry stores and souvenir shops. Several stores also offer Mexican folk art.
Nightlife
The small island of Cozumel offers plenty of nightlife, including the ever-popular Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and Senor Frogs located downtown, and the Hard Rock Café, located south of town, across from the cruise ship pier.
